Aliyu Zubairu, the head coach of Flying Eagles, has taken complete responsibility for his team’s recent loss to South Africa’s Amajita. He pledged to make substantial changes as they gear up for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
On Thursday, in a closely fought semi-final encounter in the ongoing 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, the Flying Eagles were defeated 1-0 by the Amajita
The match’s sole goal occurred in the 66th minute, when Tylon Smith, a forward from South Africa, scored with a precisely aimed header, securing their place in the final.
The Flying Eagles controlled possession and generated multiple scoring chances during the game, but their failure to capitalize on these opportunities proved detrimental. Zubairu recognized this reality.
I take full responsibility for our failure to reach the final. As head coach, the blame rests on me,” he stated during a post-match media interaction.
Reflecting on the tournament, Zubairu noted that it has been a critical learning experience that allowed the coaching staff to identify players who are ready to advance to elite competition and those who may not be suited for such challenges.
“After our success in the WAFU B tournament, we made the tough decision to drop many players whose performances did not meet the continental standard,” he explained. “A similar review will take place again because it’s evident that some members of the current squad are not prepared for the demands of competing at a World Cup level.”
As for the future, the Flying Eagles will compete against Egypt, the host nation, in a third-place match on Sunday. Their goal is to obtain a medal and make up for their performance in the tournament.
Conversely, Raymond Mdaka, the head coach of South Africa’s U-20 team, voiced his pride in their hard-fought victory against Nigeria and underscored the importance of their win in the semifinals.
“Indeed, another victory—kudos to the guys. Throughout the match, they demonstrated remarkable character and discipline as they executed the game plan without a hitch. Mdaka expressed gratitude for their effort during the post-match press conference.
He recognized the fierce competition presented by Nigeria, mentioning the intensity of the encounter. “The game was tough, but our boys are developing with each match, acquiring invaluable experience and enhancing all aspects of our play. Mdaka added, “I extend my gratitude to both the players and the nation for their unwavering support.”
As they get ready to compete against Morocco in the final on Sunday at the Cairo International Stadium, South Africa will have an opportunity to seize the title.
