Under the auspices of the Nigerian Governors Forum, or NGF, the governors of the nation’s 36 states have supported the creation of state police.
Following their second meeting, which took place in Abuja from Wednesday into the early hours of Thursday, the governors voiced this support.
However, they emphasised that any new policing system must uphold citizens’ rights and be supported by explicit constitutional provisions.

In a statement issued by AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the governor of Kwara state and chairman of the NGF, the governors said that they examined new developments in the development of a feasible state police system.
According to the Forum, a delegation of state solicitors general and the NGF Secretariat gave members thorough presentations on the ongoing initiatives to facilitate the creation of state police throughout Nigeria.
According to the governors, the talks also included conversations with the goal of examining suggested constitutional revisions and operational frameworks that would direct execution.
Governors agreed that state policing is still a crucial step in tackling security issues, but they urged that the framework must be carefully designed, according to Dapo Abiodun, who spoke after the meeting.
We discussed matters impacting the nation at our meeting today as members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, or NGF,” Abiodun stated.
Following the discussions, a delegation of the Honourable Attorneys-General of the States and the NGF Secretariat presented to the Forum on initiatives to assist the establishment of State Police in Nigeria.
A special consultation with the Attorneys General to examine the suggested constitutional frameworks and revisions was also mentioned by the Forum.
