In order to increase awareness and mobilize support for the return of 1,000 out-of-school children to classrooms in 2025, the Leader Joe 1808 Foundation organized the fifth edition of the 1808 Charity Junior Golf Tournament. The competition, which has as its theme “Rescue Out-of-School Children,” takes place against the backdrop of Nigeria’s worsening educational crisis, with the country currently having the highest number of unschooled children in the world at over 20 million. The program, according to its organizers, uses golf—a sport linked to integrity, discipline, and focus—as a platform to advance inclusivity, education, and long-term national development.
