Achraf Hakimi, the captain of Morocco’s national team, has apologized for the contentious towel episodes that occurred near the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Stanley Nwabali of the Super Eagles and Senegalese goalkeeper Édouard Mendy were two prominent participants in the towel incidents.
During both the semifinal and the final, Moroccan team personnel, ball boys, and even players like Hakimi were frequently caught on camera attempting to steal towels from the rival goalkeepers.
People were perplexed by the sights since it appeared that the acts were intended to make it more difficult for the goalkeepers to hold on in the damp conditions.
There was some little rain during the final, and television footage showed Moroccanp layers and venue employees using towels to keep Mendy’s gloves dry.
Nwabali was treated similarly during the Atlas Lions’ semifinal game against the Super Eagles.
“These are tough times, and the game was very tense on the field,” Hakim stated on the Movistar channel following Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.
“I’m not proud of the impression we created with the towels. The team performed well in the competition despite that.
“We respected their opponent during the competition.”
In a penalty shootout, Morocco defeated Nigeria 4-2 in the Afcon semifinal, however Bruno Onyemaechi and Samuel Chukwueze missed their penalties.
