Veteran legal figure and former NBA President, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, asserts that federalism is the optimal system for managing Nigeria’s ethnic diversity.
During a Wednesday interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time,’ Agbakoba explained that given the nation’s diverse structure, federalism is the best way forward.
He argued that Nigeria is unlikely to make significant progress unless it creates space for “regional ethnicities [to have] their own independence within the context of the Nigerian federal system.”
Agbakoba noted that while the National Assembly has passed over 80 constitutional amendments this year alone, and has been engaged in slow reform for the past 25 years, these efforts have not yet produced the needed impact. He stressed that his stance on this issue remains unchanged.
So, the legal consensus remains: federalism is the key to unlocking Nigeria’s potential.
