A civil society organization, Ondo Redemption Front (ORF), has raised concerns about local government operations in Ondo State, alleging that the councils are being stifled. The group stated that despite the Federal Government’s efforts to improve governance through strong local government administration, the state government has been obstructing this progress.
At a press briefing, ORF urged the Federal Government and the Attorney General of the Federation to review the enforcement of the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy. ORF Chairman Ayodeji Ologun criticized the current governance, saying it has been reduced to mere statements and ongoing political conflicts, with critical state issues being neglected.
Ologun stressed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa needs to take his responsibilities seriously, emphasizing that effective governance requires listening, planning, and decisive action. He recalled that the Attorney General had approached the Supreme Court to empower local governments to access funds directly from the federation account for better administration, a relief granted by the court.
In response, the state chapter of the APC dismissed the allegations as unfounded, describing them as an attempt to damage the reputation of the elected government. The party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, affirmed that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration is committed to fulfilling its electoral promises with prudence and operates within the legal framework governing all government levels.
