Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has granted amnesty to 36 convicts serving sentences at Nigerian Correctional Service centers in Ilesa and Ile-Ife to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary. The announcement was made on Wednesday through a statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, in Osogbo.
The statement explained that Governor Adeleke exercised his constitutional power under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
In a proclamation dated September 24, 2025, the Governor officially remitted the remaining sentences of the convicts. The document stated that he extended mercy to the 36 convicts under the jurisdiction of Osun State.
Governor Adeleke declared that he had annulled all penalties and consequences linked to the convictions of the beneficiaries. The proclamation directed relevant authorities to recognize the amnesty as valid under the state’s seal and authority.
Among those granted amnesty were 29 inmates from Ilesa Correctional Centre and seven from Ile-Ife Correctional Centre. Names from the Ilesa facility included Kehinde Ganiyu, Isiaka Mohammed, Oluwatosin Femi, and others. Those from Ile-Ife included Yusuf Ola, Oyedeji Sunday, and six others.
Most of the pardoned inmates were convicted of minor offenses such as stealing and conspiracy and had served significant parts of their sentences.
Governor Adeleke described the amnesty as a symbol of compassion, justice, and renewal, emphasizing the government’s commitment to justice and mercy. He noted that the amnesty was a call for rehabilitation and reintegration, aimed at helping ex-convicts become productive members of society.
