The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, who allegedly shot his wife before taking his own life at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.
In a statement by Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, the incident occurred on October 11 at the 221 Battalion quarters within the cantonment.
Preliminary findings showed that the soldier, who was on duty, had requested permission from his superior to attend to personal matters but failed to return. When colleagues went to check on him, they found both the soldier and his wife dead in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters.
Nwankwo noted that the remains of the couple have been preserved while a detailed investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Describing the event as unfortunate and deeply saddening, the Army extended condolences to the couple’s family, friends, and colleagues.
The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured that the case would be thoroughly investigated and the outcome made public, urging for public understanding and cooperation as efforts continue to prevent similar incidents in the future.
