Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, was honoured on his 85th birthday by President Bola Tinubu, who described the esteemed traditional ruler as a towering figure of unity, integrity, and nation-building whose impact has enhanced national cohesion.
The President praised the monarch’s decades-long contributions to corporate leadership and traditional governance in a statement released on Sunday by his Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. He noted that the monarch’s life exemplifies excellence, service, and dedication to national development.
Igwe Achebe is one of the most revered traditional leaders in the South-East, with a notable experience in corporate leadership and the oil and gas industry, according to Tinubu, who called him “a symbol of unity, grace, and integrity.”
The President recalled that prior to taking the throne, the monarch had a distinguished career with Shell Petroleum, where he held senior leadership positions in several Shell subsidiaries in the UK, the Netherlands, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Liberia, and Angola in addition to serving as a director in Nigeria.
He claimed that Igwe Achebe’s shift from the corporate sector to traditional leadership has been characterised by his ongoing devotion to humanity, especially in the fields of socioeconomic development, youth empowerment, and peacebuilding.
