Popular Nollywood actress, Eniola Ajao, has revealed the challenges she faced after she got pregnant at the age of 20.
The actress recounted her path to motherhood and mentioned that she concealed her pregnancy because of societal expectations.
Speaking in an interview on Talk To B podcast, the filmmaker recounted how she isolates herself to avoid being called “baby mama”.
You know that things aren’t like they were back then. Becoming pregnant at 20 was somewhat dramatic, as it feels like everything is against you. There may have been a time when you wanted to die, and the stigma would make it impossible for you to marry again.
“At that time, it was seen as shameful, so you would want to conceal it from your parents and the public. Although I didn’t regard it as shameful, it was thought to be early.
Omotola got married at 18, lot of people married at 17, but where I come from, they want you to graduate, and do a couple of things. I was already in Yabatech when I got pregnant. I was hiding it. It’s just close friends and family members knew about it. Thinking that you may not get married, somebody calling you a baby mama, and you don’t want to get stigmatised”.
