The second Lagos School Tennis Tournament, sponsored by the Allison and Oluremi Ayida Foundation, saw over 70 schools start the competition for prizes yesterday. The preliminary round, which was held at the Lagos Tennis Club in Onikan, featured exciting matches from 125 playersSpeaking during the opening ceremony, Taofeek Adejare, the secretary of the foundation, commended the players for overcoming the screening process, pointing out that only 125 of the 207 entries received were eligible to compete. He also underlined that sports development is one of the foundation’s main goals and reaffirmed its dedication to helping tennis in schools flourishSpiritual development, educational progress, and youth and sports development are the three pillars upon which the Foundation is built,” he stated. Taofeek went on to say that the competition was also planned to honor the memory of the late Allison Ayida, a tennis enthusiast and trustee of the Foundation. In essence, this competition honors his memory and aims to develop young athletes by introducing them to competitive sports, said Headded. In the first round of the U-16 boys’ division, Ubiebi Peter defeated Igbinovia Gabriel 3–0. He was thrilled to have won for the first time after rising from the U-14 division.
