The Anambra State administration has pledged to track down the gunmen who ambushed Dr. Ben Nwankwo, the Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, on Sunday night.
Unidentified gunmen targeted Nwankwo, a former federal lawmaker who was recently recognized as the governor’s adviser. The assailants killed Nwankwo’s companion and two security personnel who were linked to him.
The Anambra State government stated in a statement by Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, that no stone will be left unturned, notwithstanding the police’s pledge to make sure the gunmen were apprehended.
“This was more than an attack on one person,” the statement said. It was an assault on the government, the people of Anambra, and the peace, security, and democratic order of our state.
“The Anambra State Government extends its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and shares in their grief. Four people tragically lost their lives and deserve justice.”
“Our resolve to eradicate all forms of crime from Anambra will not be impacted by this singular incident following over a year of peace and security in the state.”
The police and other security services are searching for and prosecuting all those responsible for this heinous deed.
The attack on the chief of staff’s convoy to the governor has horrified the Anambra State government. He was returning from an official assignment when the incident occurred on Sunday, May 31, 2026, between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. near the Orumba North–Awka South borders.
