Dr. Mahmud Hassan, a prominent economist and former director of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been chosen by Dangote Group as its Group Chief Economist, bolstering the Group’s ability to provide economic advice during a period of increased volatility in both local and international markets. According to a statement from Dangote Group, Hassan will report directly to Aliko Dangote, the Group President, in his new position as the Group’s chief advisor on economic strategy, market trends, and policy implications.Hassan has almost thirty years of expertise in central banking, financial sector regulation, and economic policy creation. He held a number of key roles at the CBN over his lengthy career, including Director of the Monetary Policy Department and Director of the Trade and Exchange Department. In addition, he was the Monetary Policy Committee’s secretary and the CBN Governor’s special assistant for economic policy and research. He presently serves on the Board of Economists of Daily Trust. As a lead consultant to the African Union Commission on trade integration projects and the creation of the African Monetary Fund, Dr. Hassan has contributed significantly to the advancement of regional economic integration outside of Nigeria.Academically, he has a BSc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, a PhD in Economics, and an MSc in Energy Economics and Policy from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. He graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School and is certified as an AML CFT analyst and bank examiner. Dr. Hassan is a Fellow of numerous professional organizations, including the Compliance Institute of Nigeria, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Statistical Association. In addition, he is a prolific scholar with numerous papers in the fields of financial engineering, energy economics, macroeconomics, and monetary policy. He is currently the President of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics and continues to teach as a visiting professor at various Nigerian universities in addition to his business position.
