The Lagos State branch of the All Progressives Congress, known as the APC, on Wednesday called on Nigerian citizens to disregard the unnecessary conflict, incorrect details, and politically driven frenzy surrounding the recent instruction to withdraw police guards from Very Important Persons, called VIPs.
The spokesperson for the state APC chapter, Seye Oladejo, stated that rival political parties have greatly exaggerated the situation, as they prefer creating excitement over calm consideration.
In a signed declaration, Oladejo asserted that the basic facts are uncomplicated, direct, and undeniable: This rule is neither new nor strange, and it does not single out any person or group. It is a standard procedure intended to bring back proper professional conduct within the Nigeria Police Force and emphasize the main duty of the police, which is to keep the general populace safe, not just a small privileged group.
For many years, relevant parties and security experts have complained about the unbalanced assignment of police staff, where thousands of officers who should be protecting communities, infrastructure, and public areas were instead assigned to private citizens as marks of status. Therefore, the change is a correction that should have happened long ago, not something causing disagreement.
Oladejo called the attempts by opposition members, who constantly seek importance, to exploit the situation by circulating false accounts to mislead the public unfortunate.
He further mentioned: Their loud complaints show a way of thinking that views public organizations as private property. Nigeria cannot keep paying for national lack of safety while catering to the sensitive feelings of VIPs.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police should receive praise, not disapproval, for supporting a change that places the safety of millions of regular Nigerians first.
The Lagos APC strongly supports any rule that improves national safety, better police presence in communities, and restores order to the security structure.
We also wish to assure the public that this choice does not affect the legally required security details for those who hold public office or those who are entitled to official protection by law. It simply restricts the misuse, excessive actions, and unnecessary assignment of police officers to private functions.
In the future, we anticipate more changes in the security sector as Nigeria moves faster toward a safer, more effective, and more responsible system of policing. Those trying to turn this change into a political issue should remember that the time for breaking rules without punishment is finished.
In brief, the supposed anger is unnecessary, the attempts to cause fear are baseless, and the efforts to politicize this are doomed from the start. This is a good action toward bringing back national safety, nothing more or less.
