According to the US embassy in Nigeria, Nigerian governors waste public money extravagantly.
While releasing a report on the governors’ lavish expenditures on Tuesday, the embassy made this statement.
The investigation exposed how, despite the nation’s general economic distress, governors spend billions on constructing or remodeling government buildings.
Additionally, it said that although President Bola Tinubu requested Nigerians to bear the financial loss brought on by his policies, the governors did not make the same sacrifice.
“The ruling class in Nigeria is not tightening their belts, but Nigerians are.”
The government of Oyo State, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, sanctioned N63.4 billion for the refurbishment of the Government House, saying it was an unworthy and embarrassing building.
“Gombe, one of Nigeria’s poorest states, received N14.9 billion from Governor Inuwa Yahaya for a brand-new, state-of-the-art home. The House of Assembly complex is spending an additional N14.23 billion, the study stated in part.
The US embassy responded on Tuesday by posting the report’s URL and statements from advocacy groups for accountability and transparency on its official X handle.
According to the embassy, “such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust.”
