Former Governor of Bafarawa: “Opposition Parties Are Fearlessly and Shamlessly Finding Another Way.”

According to Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, the former governor of Sokoto State, Nigerian politics no longer has any true opposition groups.
Ahead of the general elections in 2027, Bafarawa reportedly responded to the recent defections of some well-known politicians from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in an interview with the BBC Hausa, according to Naija News.

Bafarawa, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) until he resigned on January 13, 2025, claimed that the opposition politicians in the nation are battling for power and wealth without doing anything to help the common people.

The former governor also bemoaned the lack of jobs and education for young people, emphasizing that opposition leaders don’t care about them.

“Opposition politics is dead in the country,” he declared. Both the people being sought after and the seekers are confused as a result. The seekers lack compassion and faith; they are blind. Securing positions is their sole objective. Meanwhile, everything is in chaos because the majority are blinded by ignorance, poverty, and hunger.

The opposition of today is “every man for himself.” In their minds, they think, “What can I gain?” Without hesitation or embarrassment, they will find another route if a door closes on them.

“There is no real opposition anymore. Everyone in the opposition is only concerned about personal gain. Once they get what they want, the idea of opposition disappears, and the masses are left to fend for themselves.

“Whenever you defeat a people with ignorance by denying them education, you have finished them. Here in the North, honestly, about 70% of our youth have no education. How can a country or region develop without education?

“Do the masses even understand their problems? Are they aware of what they are facing? If you blame the poor masses for accepting money on election day to vote, it’s not entirely their fault. They have been impoverished; they have no jobs, no means of livelihood. What else are they supposed to do?”
