Omoyele Sowore, the organizer of the Free Nnamdi Kanu protest, alleged on Monday that the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies launched an unprovoked attack on the demonstrators. Sowore maintained that the protest, intended to be peaceful and orderly to draw President Bola Tinubu’s attention to the release of Kanu, who is currently held by the Department of State Services (DSS), was met with gunfire from security personnel. The plan for the protesters was to march to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, but police officers blocked their route and fired tear gas canisters at them. Sowore stated that as soon as the protest began and people started to gather, about ten trucks arrived at once, adding, “There was no provocation on our part; it was orderly and peaceful; it was an unprovoked attack from the police force and a combined team of security people.”
