The Ogun State Government has voiced its disappointment regarding the protest from athletes representing the state at the 22nd National Sports Festival over unpaid allowances.
According to DAILY POST, the athletes had obstructed the entrance of the Games Village at Babcock University in Ilishan-Remo, limiting the movement of other athletes whose events were scheduled to begin at 8 am at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Kuto and the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja.
In a statement released by Kayode Akinmade, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, the state government declared that the protest contradicted the values and objectives upheld by the state.
He remarked that the athletes acted out of impatience, as all necessary preparations had been finalized for their allowance payments on Tuesday.
“Governor Dapo Abiodun is profoundly aware and dedicated to the well-being of all festival participants, Akinmade stated. There is no situation in which he would permit Ogun athletes to suffer or be overlooked.”
“It is regrettable and unjustified that a small number of athletes protested earlier today. It is in stark contrast to the immense success the state has achieved in hosting the festival—from the grand opening ceremony to Team Ogun’s impressive performance,” the statement continued.
He also revealed that the payment of allowances had begun, with athletes receiving bank alerts as planned.
“Those who demonstrated were mistaken. He concluded, “It was a clear case of impatience.”
