Nnamdi Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, has alleged that he has faced threats to his life and blackmail since taking on the Biafra agitator’s case.
Ejimakor said the intimidation began after Kanu’s legal victory over the Nigerian government regarding his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021. Despite court rulings discharging and acquitting Kanu, the government has yet to release him.
Speaking in a podcast with Chief Chidi Nwanyanwu, Ejimakor expressed frustration that some individuals benefiting from Kanu’s victories abroad through asylum claims have resorted to blackmailing him.
He said, “Some of these people blackmailing me are using these victories to secure asylum abroad. What greater evil can there be than that? When I succeeded under very difficult conditions, especially in the Enugu State High Court, I began receiving threats to my safety. Handling these cases and remaining focused can only be by God’s grace.”
The lawyer revealed that the prolonged legal battles have taken a toll on him physically and mentally. “I have aged greatly since 2021 when I took over these cases. It has not been easy, but I continue to work proudly and with determination,” he said.
Ejimakor also addressed accusations that he is not an IPOB lawyer, saying, “When I filed a petition to overturn the declaration of IPOB as a terrorist group, they blackmailed me, saying I’m not IPOB’s lawyer. How can you question success? If I represent Nnamdi Kanu, everyone knows that automatically I represent IPOB.”
He added that the Federal Government has occasionally tried to challenge his legal standing in court, but he has always managed to overcome such obstacles.
