The family of the late 13-year-old rape victim, Ochanya Ogbanje, is considering filing a civil lawsuit against individuals linked to her death, according to journalist and family member John Ameh.
Ameh expressed frustration that the main suspect in the case, Victor Ogbuja, has remained at large since 2018, alleging that both the Benue State Government and the Nigeria Police have failed to arrest him.
He criticized the judicial system, pointing out the “shocking” contrast in verdicts: a State High Court acquitted Andrew Ogbuja (the main suspect’s relative), while a Federal High Court convicted his wife based on the same set of facts. Ameh sees this inconsistency as evidence of the government’s failure to hold criminals accountable.
Ameh further complained that despite widespread public outcry, the principal suspect is living freely in Lagos, suggesting his evasion is due to official negligence and political protection.
