According to Senator AbdulRahman Kawu Sumaila, he left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in order to provide his constituency with more chances for advancement and answers.
He claims that if he stays under the NNPP’s framework, he will not be able to take advantage of these prospects.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, he explained that although he had defected from Kano’s ruling party, his relationship with the state government would not be affected.
He made it clear that he would continue to concentrate on furthering his constituency’s development, which he believes would be easier to accomplish outside of the NNPP.
Sumaila explained that in addition to other considerations, his obligation to better the lot of his people was the primary driver behind his decision to leave the party.
One of the motivations for departing has to do with our home region and how we could offer our folks something genuinely helpful. “Negotiations, discussions, and pursuing the best results for the community are all part of politics,” he said.
The senator also discussed the NNPP’s performance in the previous elections, reaffirming the party’s significant contributions.
“I also contributed in my own capacity, and the NNPP played a significant role in the elections,” Sumaila said.
Despite his political shift, Kawu Sumaila reassured his supporters that his departure would not disrupt ongoing development projects in Kano.
He expressed confidence that his decision would lead to improved economic opportunities for his constituents, stressing that he held no regrets over leaving the NNPP.
“I have no regrets about leaving NNPP. Everyone is focused on finding the best solutions for their people, and that is what matters most,” he concluded.
