In the first leg of their 1-1 UFA Champions League semi-final encounter at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium in Spain, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid both scored a penalty.
The tense match was settled by two penalties: Ademola Lookman and Antoine Griezmann of the Super Eagles of Nigeria squandered numerous chances to give Diego Simeone’s team a first leg advantage, while Viktoor Gyokores and Julian Alvarez scored from the spot for both teams.
The two defensive-minded teams were unable to duplicate the thrilling nine-goal match between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in the first semi-final.
Rather, the game included two penalties and a goal by David Raya. Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman also missed excellent chances to give the home team the victory.
Early on in the game, both teams had opportunities, with Raya making a superb save on Julian Alvarez’s attempt and Piero Hincapie shooting high and wide from a Noni Madueke cross.
Before Viktor Gyokores won a penalty and scored it to put Arsenal ahead 1-0 at the interval, Madueke also had a curler miss the far post by a few inches.
Early in the second half, Atletico responded with their own penalty through Alvarez, an Argentine striker who scored his tenth UCL goal of the year with a powerful finish to level the score at 56 minutes.
The home team had multiple opportunities to take the lead, but Lookman’s attempt was stopped by Raya, while Antoine Griezmann was thwarted by the woodwork.
Mikel Arteta’s Gunners hung on for a draw heading into the second leg at the Emirates stadium next week after Arsenal’s penalty against Eberechi Eze was overruled for simulation.
