More Nigerians disable SMS alert over charges

According to Daily Trust, an increasing number of Nigerian bank clients are choosing to turn off their SMS alert services, citing the increased prices as a key worry.

An essential security component has been the SMS alert service, which notifies account holders of operations including withdrawals, deposits, and transfers. But rising costs for these notifications have caused many users to reevaluate their use.

According to Daily Trust, the federal government has given the telecom service providers permission to raise their rates generally.
Following this, banks were able to raise the maximum amount of money they may charge consumers for SMS alerts.
Since the increase went into effect on May 1, 2025, a growing number of consumers have chosen to discontinue using the SMS service.
