As it considers putting in place statewide flow control measures to lessen the growing physical and mental exhaustion among controllers, the Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (NATCA) has issued a warning that aircraft delays throughout the nation may soon become inevitable.
The Association stated that deteriorating working conditions, a lack of personnel, and the ongoing deterioration of vital communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) infrastructure are the reasons behind the decision.
According to Daily Trust, flow control is a traffic management strategy used to reduce workload by adjusting the intake of aircraft into crowded locations, such airport airspace.
An airline official cautioned that such a NATCA action would exacerbate the financial difficulties faced by airlines already struggling with the high cost of gasoline.
“In just one month, our fuel prices rose by 150%. Because you cannot match that fare rise without cratering your passenger numbers in a relatively soft but fiercely competitive market where the main price push is downward, it has thrown the entire company into a crisis. Everyone is struggling mightily with this dilemma, and then this! The airline CEO stated, “Let me not ask the questions in public, but we need to address this issue and the underlying reasons why we can even get here at all.”
