New Yam: The Abia community outlaws firearms and halts weddings and funerals for 28 days.

In Ebem Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, Ohafia LGA of Abia State, the use of firearms, axes, knives, daggers, and machetes has been prohibited for the upcoming Iri Ji (Igba Ekpe) New Yam festival.

Additionally, in order to guarantee calm and orderly festivities, there would be no private ceremonies, weddings, or funerals from September 20 to October 16, 2025.

In cooperation with the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), Eze Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, the paramount ruler of the Ebem Ohafia ancient kingdom, issued the directive.

Ebem Ohafia Ancient Kingdom Public Relations Officer Ifeanyi Okali issued a statement on Monday warning that anyone found in possession of weapons would be turned over to security forces for prosecution.

The royal train will travel straight from Ebem Ujuruezie Palace to Abum Square for the Abum Assembly and celebrations, according to the Abia community, so there won’t be a public procession this year.

The statement issued a warning, saying, “The monarch emphasized that Ebem Ohafia remains an accommodating community but will not tolerate acts that threaten peace, culture, and security.”
