Nigeria is currently experiencing a crisis unlike any other since its founding as a legal and political entity. Nigeria has historically withstood numerous systemic shocks, primarily because of the tremendous weight of foreign geopolitical and economic interests that the Nigerian state has continued to serve, rather than because of internal cohesiveness or institutional resilience. These interests are changing as the world system changes dramatically. Therefore, the crucial question is whether we can maintain Nigeria as a single political entity as a nation and as a blend of old regional civilizations.
