According to The PUNCH, Nigeria’s 45-athlete team for the upcoming CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra includes world record holder Tobi Amusan. The team’s medal push is anticipated to be led by a mix of known stars and up-and-coming talent.
Twenty male and twenty female athletes have been selected for the continental championship by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.
Alongside Rosemary Chukwuma, one of the fastest female sprinters this season, Amusan leads the women’s team.
Amusan is anticipated to compete in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with Adaobi Tabugbo and Janet Sunday, while Chukwuma, who was unable to attend the World Relays in Gaborone, will compete in the women’s 100-meter and 4×100-meter relay teams with Miracle Ezechukwu, Maria Thompson-Omokwe, and Tejiri Ugoh.
Long jumper Ruth Usoro, hammer thrower Oyesade Olatoye, and seasoned quartermiler Patience Okon-George are all on the women’s squad.
Ese Brume, a four-time African long jump champion, and Chioma Onyekwere, a former discus champion who recently experimented with weightlifting before to the Commonwealth Games, are notable absences from the women’s team.
Nigeria’s campaign in the men’s division will be led by sprint sensation Favour Ashe and Africa’s top shot put athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi.
Athletes like Romeo Bernard, Emmanuel Audu, and javelin thrower Adams Samuel Kure from Nigeria will also compete in the field events.
In addition to enhancing Nigeria’s chances in the combined events leading up to the Commonwealth Games in July, Deathlon national record holder Jami Schlueter will have the opportunity to make his Nigerian debut in Ghana as one of the contenders for a podium finish.
Schlueter’s quick ascent has coincided with his recent allegiance change from Great Britain to Nigeria.
He has swiftly changed the national record books since making the change.
At the US Combined Events Championships in Indianapolis on February 22, 2026, he broke the previous Nigerian indoor heptathlon record with 5,871 points, placing him second on the African all-time list.
As preparations for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continue, the championships in Accra will give Nigerian athletes another significant opportunity to compete against the finest on the continent.In the meantime, it has been reported that the 24 athletes who competed for Nigeria in the World Relays have returned to camp ahead of the championships, and further invited athletes are anticipated to join them.
