The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has voiced its astonishment at the death of veteran sports administrator Abba Yola.
The NOC President, Habu Ahmed Gumel, on behalf of the Nigerian Olympic family, issued a statement to journalists on Tuesday expressing condolences to Yola’s family and the broader sports community, describing him as a dedicated public servant and a vital contributor to the development of sports in the country.
„Abba Yola war mehr als nur ein leidenschaftlicher Sportfunktionär. According to the statement, he was a dedicated public servant who devoted himself entirely to advancing athletics and football, serving as a pillar in Nigeria’s sporting landscape.
According to him, Yola served in several high profile positions within Nigeria’s sports administration, including as Chairman of Kano Pillars Football Club and as a staff member of the now-defunct Federal Ministry of Sports.
“He also held roles as Chief of Staff to former Sports Minister Chief Sunday Dare, and as Special Assistant to former Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Patrick Ekeji.
Over the years, Yola was appointed to numerous special committees, where his contributions left a lasting impact on policy and sports development.
His calm and respectful nature allowed him to build strong, lasting relationships. His sense of style and grace reflected the gentleman he truly was,” Engr. Gumel added.
The NOC described Yola’s passing as a great loss to Kano State and the entire Nigerian sports fraternity, calling on all to reflect on a life of service and dedication.
