In anticipation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention scheduled for November, party stalwart and former presidential candidate, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has initiated a reconciliation endeavor across the North Central geopolitical zone to foster internal unity.
As part of this consultative process, Olawepo-Hashim convened meetings with several prominent figures, including former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and former Minister of Sports, Damishi Sango. These interactions are viewed by analysts as a strategic undertaking aimed at restoring confidence and cohesion within the PDP structure.
Following his meeting with Saraki, Olawepo-Hashim disclosed that both leaders reached a consensus to collaborate for the overarching benefit of the nation and the stability of the party. He stated, “We agreed to cooperate for the greater good of Nigeria, to reconstruct the PDP within the North Central zone and throughout the country.”
Political observers interpret Olawepo-Hashim’s renewed engagement as a component of larger efforts to consolidate the PDP’s North Central bloc, a region often regarded as the party’s moral compass. This reconciliation drive is particularly significant given the ongoing wave of defections by PDP officials and members in various states, who have cited internal leadership crises and diminishing national influence as primary reasons for their departure.
