According to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, can win the 2027 presidential election without forming a coalition with the PDP or receiving assistance from political leaders such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.
Theophilus Ndubuaku, the Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, stated in an interview with Punch that Obi is still a strong and well-liked contender.
He dismissed any rumors that Obi might return to the PDP, calling it a “crisis-ridden and near-empty platform.”
“A coalition is not necessary for Peter Obi to win the 2027 presidential election,” he stated. He is a candidate who can be sold. As you may remember, prior to the contentious issues, he was already cruising to victory in the 2023 elections. Nigerians want him in leadership, as evidenced by the fact that he even defeated Tinubu in his own stronghold in Lagos.
“He will prevail as long as INEC holds a free and fair election. To do so, he can also take advantage of his contacts both domestically and abroad.
Ndubuaku insisted Obi commands nationwide acceptance across all six geopolitical zones and warned against any return to the PDP.
He said, “No serious candidate will consider the PDP as a viable platform at this point.
“Obi is a disciplined man. If people are suggesting he return to the PDP, on what basis? Compare the PDP’s issues with those of the Labour Party. While LP’s crisis—centering around Julius Abure—has been settled by the Supreme Court, the PDP is still battling a hydra-headed crisis. Moving from LP to PDP would be like jumping from frying pan to fire.”
He further noted that fears about zoning and power rotation are unfounded, especially in light of Obi’s reputation for performance.
