Umo Eno, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, has responded to the issue surrounding his candidacy for a second term as president by stating that his position is based on his convictions and does not represent a betrayal of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking to supporters at a rally in the Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Governor Eno stated that his choice to support the President is not motivated by political expediency but rather by sincerity.
He remarked, “I don’t know how to speak from both sides of my mouth.”
While some political figures covertly swear loyalty to Tinubu in private but behave differently in public, Governor Eno disclosed that he prefers to be open about his stance.
“When I announced the other day that I would back Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, many asked me why. They go there and tell the baba, “We will assist you,” in the evening, and then they do something else in the afternoon,” he said.
“Baba Bola Ahmed Tinubu has my support for a second term. The time has not yet arrived, but I will explain why when it does. But first, let me keep it. Lying to oneself is pointless.
Eno said that Tinubu’s development initiatives in Akwa Ibom would speak for itself and that his motivations will become more apparent soon.
“You will understand why we shouldn’t go elsewhere after you see what he is doing for our state,” he remarked. “So, if you want more support, hold off. We’ll help someone else after he’s done.”
However, he was eager to add that this stance does not mean that he is giving up on his PDP roots.
“Akwa Ibom is incapable of flip-flopping,” he declared. “I am still a member of my party despite it. I have the right to express my own opinions.
The governor also received a political boost during the rally, noting that his second-term ambition has been affirmed by none other than Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who publicly expressed his support.
“The senate president has told me in many fora,” he said. “It has been confirmed today by the vote that has been moved, and our mother has also spoken, that they will support Pastor Umo Eno for a second term.”
Closing on a light but meaningful note, Eno said: “So if you take your own, I take my own. You fall for me, I fall for you. Na play, not be fight. If you fall for me, I fall for you.”
