The passing of Arise News anchor Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu has been characterized by Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, as unfortunate and a terrible loss for the Arise News team, her immediate family, the Nigerian media community, and the country as a whole.
“I write to convey our deepest condolences to you and the entire ARISE News family on the shocking and untimely death of your esteemed anchor, Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu,” Idris wrote in a signed letter of condolence addressed to Chief Nduka Obaigbena, the Chairman of the Arise News channel.
who, by all accounts, was a passionate and committed news host, an impeccable lawyer, and a role model whose work struck a chord with viewers in Nigeria and beyond. “Ms. Somtochukwu’s tragic death is a grievous loss not only to the ARISE News family, but to the Nigerian media fraternity, and indeed the nation,” Idris said, expressing his sadness over the “heinous incident that cut down a promising young journalist in her prime.”
He promised that the circumstances surrounding the late news anchor’s death would be quickly investigated.
The Minister prayed that God would give them the strength to deal with the loss and expressed his “sincere condolences to the parents, siblings, coworkers, and all who knew and loved the late news anchor.”
According to BASEMEDIA, Sommie, 29, died early on Monday, September 29, 2025, after an armed robbery at her home in the Katampe neighborhood of Abuja. The Nigeria Police are currently looking into the incident.
