Yesterday, the House of Representatives decided to look into $25 million in financial subsidies given to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA). Adedayo Adesola, a legislator from Lagos, and Felix Nwaeke, a politician from Rivers State, co-sponsored a motion of urgent public interest during plenary, which was followed by the House’s resolution.Titled: “A call to action to prevent the Nigerian Football Federation from abusing its FIFA and CAF grants further,” Adesola pointed out that the various national teams’ recent bad performances were mostly caused by the global football regulatory body’s inadequate grant administration. Sunday Oliseh, a former captain of the Super Eagles, has accused the NFF of impeding football’s progress in Nigeria by stealing FIFA and CAF subsidies. He cited the NFF’s dubious usage of $1 million from FIFA to get the Super Eagles ready for the 2002 World Cup.
