Several local vigilante members were killed by bandits in an ambush close to the Bauchi–Plateau border, according to the Bauchi State Police Command.
Ahmed Wakil, the Bauchi Police Public Relations Officer, said in a statement on Monday that the incident took place on Saturday.
According to Wakil, the incident was reported to the Alkaleri Divisional Headquarters on Sunday at approximately 9:40 a.m.
“The Command received a report from Alkaleri Divisional Police Headquarters about an incident that happened earlier that day at about 05:40 hours on May 4, 2025, at approximately 09:40 hours,” he stated.
“While on a routine patrol along Duguri, Mansur, and the Dajin Madam forest bordering Bauchi and Plateau State, a combined team of professional hunters from Duguri and Gwana District was ambushed by armed bandits.”
“Both the bandits and members of the vigilante group suffered numerous casualties as a result of this confrontation.”
According to Wakil, the bodies of the victims were found by a tactical police unit that was dispatched to the scene.
According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that several Sabuwar Sara village residents and local vigilantes were among the dead.
He added that they were shot while trying to escape.
Wakil also said a special police team has been assigned to find the attackers and anyone linked to the crime.
The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, visited community leaders in the area.
Aliyu sent his condolences to the families of those who died.
He also strongly condemned the killings.
“The Commissioner characterised these acts as utterly reprehensible and a significant threat to the peace and security of the state and assured the area in Full-Scale to bring the perpetrators to book,” Wakil said.
The police have not released the number of people killed, even though different figures are being shared on social media.
