The devastating news of Miss Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu’s untimely death has caused great sadness and a sense of loss, according to Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, the governor of Anambra State.
According to Soludo, the news anchor, who went by Sommie, was a well-known Anambra State native.
Early on Monday, September 29, 2025, Sommie was brutally murdered during an armed robbery attack at her home in the Katampe neighborhood of Abuja.
Governor Soludo compared Miss Maduagwu to a bright star whose light has been prematurely extinguished in his condolence message.
She had already made a name for herself at the young age of 29 as a lawyer who later worked as a news anchor, reporter, and producer for ARISE News Channel, where her lively voice and high caliber of work engaged viewers throughout Nigeria and beyond.
“A lawyer by profession and a journalist by love, Sommie personified the hard work and passion for excellence that Anambra natives are known for,” Soludo stated.
The governor also bemoaned the fact that she was killed by criminal elements during her younger years and career, which is not only a personal tragedy for her family but also a loss for Anambra State, the journalism industry, and our country as a whole.
“It is extremely upsetting and unacceptable that such a bright young woman, who worked hard to inform and educate the public, should meet such a violent and senseless end,” he said.
My deepest sympathies go out to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, coworkers at ARISE News Channel, and everyone who knew and loved her on behalf of the government and the entire people of Anambra State.
Soludo urged the Nigeria Police Force to investigate this horrible crime thoroughly, quickly, and openly in order to catch the criminals and bring them to justice as soon as possible.
