The Berom Community Development Association (BECA) publicly endorsed the call for the creation of state police, arguing it is the most effective way to combat relentless insecurity and attacks on rural communities in Plateau State.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the group, led by its new President Timothy Choji, declared its full support for Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s advocacy for state police. They believe this new security structure would significantly curb invasions by bandits and terrorists, quickly respond to threats in vulnerable areas, and restore public confidence.
BECA stressed that farmers are currently unable to cultivate their lands and often see nearly ready crops deliberately destroyed. Choji stated that the matter of establishing state police must be addressed with “the urgency it deserves” as a long-term solution to these attacks.
Despite opposition from some political figures, BECA urged its community members to back Governor Mutfwang’s push for state police, particularly given the constant threats faced by Berom-dominated communities in areas like Barkin Ladi, Jos East, and Riyom.
