Former Court of Appeal President, Justice Ayo Salami, asserts that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan is constitutionally barred from running for president in 2027.
In an opinion piece, Salami argued that the Constitution clearly limits anyone to a maximum of eight years in the highest office. Since Jonathan first completed the remainder of the late President Yar’Adua’s term before winning a full four-year term of his own, any future attempt to run would be an illegal violation of the term limits.
Salami stressed that even if Jonathan were to run and win, the courts would nullify the election victory. He concluded that Jonathan’s ambition to contest in the 2027 general election is “effectively and undoubtedly shot down” by the law.
