The Nigerian Consultative Forum (NCF) has called for President Bola Tinubu to grant amnesty to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (POB), but Kanu’s family has rejected the calls, arguing that Kanu is innocent and should be released unconditionally.
On behalf of the family, Prince Emmanuel Kanu released a statement on Monday, calling the NCF’s proposal “reprehensible, defamatory, and legally indefensible.”
Remember how NCF Chairman Dede Uzor Uzor and Secretary-General Dr. Frank Udemadu urged the federal government to grant amnesty to Kanu and Abba Kyari, the former police officer accused of drug and money laundering, during a press briefing in Abuja over the weekend? However, the comparison was brushed aside as scandalous by the Kanu family.
It is not just offensive, Prince Emmanuel said, “but this scandalous conflation of a globally recognized political prisoner with an individual accused of heinous crimes is a calculated act of defamation, an affront to justice, and a deliberate attempt to undermine the rule of law.”
The family claims that since Kanu was already found not guilty by the Court of Appeal, he does not require amnesty.
