Human rights activist, Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, has criticized the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for requesting government approval to arm its personnel, describing the move as a misplaced priority and evidence of a misunderstanding of true road safety.”
In a statement released in Warri on Monday, Agberen argued that road safety is about enlightenment, prevention, and discipline not intimidation.
“Nigeria is already overwhelmed with armed agencies — Police, Customs, NDLEA, and others. Do we really need to add another layer of fear on our already dangerous roads? Guns will not fill potholes, repair failed highways, or end the bribery culture that weakens public trust,” he stated.
According to him, professionalism, digital monitoring tools like dashcams, bodycams, and automated number plate systems, along with consistent public education, would earn FRSC officers respect without a single bullet.
He further stressed that arming the corps is about power, not safety, warning that if granted, similar demands could come from VIO, NYSC, and others, effectively turning Nigerian highways into military zones.
“Accidents are not caused by lack of bullets but by lack of discipline, infrastructure, and transparency,” Agberen maintained.
He urged FRSC to build credibility by eliminating bribery, improving officer training, and advocating for safer road networks.
“A gun in their hands will not save lives from reckless driving — but integrity, technology, and proper training certainly will,” he concluded.
