The acting National Chairman of INEC, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, has urged all media outlets and individuals accredited for the Anambra State Governorship Election to perform their duties with the highest level of professionalism and responsibility.
Speaking at a meeting with media executives, Agbamuche-Mbu emphasized the media’s critical role as a defense against fake and misleading information.
She reminded all applicants that the Media Accreditation Portal will strictly close at midnight on October 24, 2025, with no extension, noting that 43 organizations, representing 363 personnel, have already applied as of October 15.
She also highlighted that the official media tags include a scannable security code to instantly verify the holder’s accredited status for security and transparency.
In response, the National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahaya, called on INEC to ensure its electoral reforms (in technology, transparency, and inclusivity) are effectively communicated to the public, as media reports build citizen trust.
He urged a deeper partnership between INEC and the media, which should include capacity building for journalists, stronger fact-checking efforts, and timely access to information from the Commission.
