The Kano State Government has flatly rejected a report by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) that accused it of violating press freedom.
The Kano Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Wayya, called the WSCIJ’s report, which listed Kano among the top three states for press freedom violations, “baseless and unfounded,” arguing it completely lacked evidence or credibility.

* Respect for the Press: The government insists it respects journalists’ rights and welcomes constructive criticism that is supported by facts. However, it will not tolerate “deliberate falsehoods” aimed at damaging the government’s reputation.

* Proof of Media-Friendly Stance: To counter the accusation, the Commissioner highlighted Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s track record, citing national and international awards he has received, such as “African Governor of the Year for Good Governance.” He also noted that Governor Yusuf was the only governor in 2024 to peacefully receive and dialogue with nationwide protesters against bad governance, demonstrating a commitment to democratic values and open communication.
In summary, the Kano government dismissed the report as a fabrication while affirming its commitment to transparency and the protection of journalists’ rights.
