The management of Taraba State University (TSU) in Jalingo has indefinitely suspended the Students’ Union Government (SUG) due to claims of improper behavior during the recent 2025 Students’ Week festivities.
This decision was made after pictures and videos from the event’s contentious “Gender Swap Day” became public, leading to widespread anger among the university community and the general public. The university claimed these activities violated its dress code, values, and moral standards.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Paul Bako, signed a statement on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, calling the situation “regrettable and disappointing” and noting that the actions of some students didn’t align with the institution’s fundamental principles.
An emergency management meeting on Monday, October 13, reviewed the incidents and determined that the disruption during the week-long celebration was caused by the current SUG leadership’s poor coordination and supervision.
One outcome of the meeting was the indefinite suspension of the SUG to allow for a full overhaul of student representation and leadership. The university also plans to implement a new structure to foster greater accountability, discipline, and inclusiveness among student leaders. The statement also warned that students whose actions “misrepresented the university’s image will face disciplinary action,” and that those involved in “criminal acts have been arrested and will be handed over to law enforcement”.
In response, the SUG, headed by Victor Mishak Abednego, issued a formal apology to the university management, expressing regret for the embarrassment caused by the event and promising to follow university regulations more strictly in the future.
The university reiterated its dedication to moral integrity and academic excellence, issuing a warning that such behavior will not be permitted in any subsequent student-organized events.
