The Nigerian government has sidelined the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anete, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, leads the nation’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund meeting in Washington, DC.
This comes after presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed on Sunday that the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, is currently ill and unable to perform his duties. Onanuga announced that Cardoso would head the Nigerian delegation to the annual meeting starting Monday, instead of Uzoka-Anete, who was expected to lead according to protocol.
He explained that Cardoso, serving as the alternate governor, would represent Edun, who is receiving medical care. The delegation will still include Uzoka-Anete.
The development follows speculations that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had sought Edun’s replacement after reports that he suffered a stroke and was taken abroad. However, the presidency clarified that Edun is receiving treatment within Nigeria and dismissed reports of any replacement plans.
