The Federal Government has announced that it has fulfilled all the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and urged the union to halt its strike. Education Minister Tunji Alausa made this statement on Monday during an interview on ‘The Morning Brief’ on Channels Television.
Alausa explained that the government has engaged with ASUU repeatedly since his tenure began, adding that the strike is therefore unjustified. “We have addressed every single request by ASUU; there is no need for this strike, and we are pleading with them to return to school,” he said.
ASUU had declared a two-week total warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria, citing the government’s failure to meet its demands. The union’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the strike during a press briefing at the University of Abuja on Sunday.
“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on the ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on 28th September 2025. Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, 13th October 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” Piwuna stated.
However, the minister refuted claims that the government had been slow or unwilling to respond to ASUU’s demands.
