The departure of some party leaders to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been characterized as unimportant by Abayomi Tella, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State.
Following their defection, several PDP and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) members were welcomed to Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Monday.
Adekunle Abdulkabir Akinlade, the running mate of the PDP in the state, was among the members of the group, which was headed by Sikirulai Ogundele, a former chairman of the party.
Olowo Fuja, Ekelojumati, and a number of grassroots activists from other local government regions were among the delegation’s other notable participants.
The closed-door discussion was described as friendly and strategic, marking a turning point in the political reorganization leading up to the next elections.
Abiodun highlighted the APC’s commitment to inclusive administration and sustainable development while expressing gratitude for the delegation’s efforts to promote unity within Ogun State.
“This is not merely a political maneuver; it is a patriotic decision aimed at consolidating progress, promoting stability, and building a future of shared prosperity for our people,” Abiodun reportedly said.
Reacting, the PDP Chairman singled out Ogundele as the only “true politician,” describing others as inconsequential.
He described others as those who had at different times “crossed from party A to B, B to C, C to D.”
Tella said, “First and foremost, let me make some clarity here, there are politicians and there are politicians. Out of those people that I saw in that picture, I make bold to say that the only politician in that place is Sikirulai Ogundele.
“I’ll be honest with you: if he truly wants to go, that’s the guy I’m going to feel left the PDP. Because his soul is still in this party, I promise you. However, I don’t want to discuss other people when you are talking about them. They don’t matter, and I’m open to correction.
But the chairman assured that the PDP would control Ogun State by 2027 and wished all the defectors well.
“Like them, we will not engage in propagandizing. We’re going to discuss the facts. Regarding 2027, however, we are laying out our plan and are confident that, inshallah, we will have coasted home to victory by 12:01 on election day.
He answered, “So let them keep playing their game.”
