President Bola Tinubu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, has called for the immediate establishment of community-based peace and security committees across Nigeria.
The President made the call on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi during the General Assembly of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC), which was themed “Strengthening Community Collaboration for Lasting Peace in Northern Nigeria.”
Tinubu stated that the proposed committees would:
* Strengthen peace and stability at the grassroots level.
* Promote dialogue, conflict resolution, and better coordination between traditional rulers, communities, and security agencies.
* Encourage interfaith dialogue to foster unity and reduce communal tensions.
* Be complemented by efforts to empower women and youth through education, economic inclusion, and leadership training to curb violent extremism.
The meeting brought together traditional rulers, top security officials, and government representatives to strategize on addressing insecurity in the North.
Other key speakers included:
* Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III: Commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and urged citizens to support security agencies, advising against actions that could undermine their morale.
* Shehu of Borno: Highlighted the need for sustained collaboration between communities, traditional rulers, and the military to consolidate peace efforts.
* Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa: Reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring peace across the country.
* Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu: Called for national unity and increased public support for the Armed Forces.
* Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State: Welcomed the Council members and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting traditional institutions as key partners in promoting peace and stability.
The Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) were also represented at the event, acknowledging the critical role of traditional rulers in enhancing security coordination.
