At the Kanawa Forest Reserve in Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Gombe State Command, officially opened a recently built Agro Rangers base with residential amenities on Monday.
The revelation was a step toward resolving herder-farmer disputes and bolstering the protection of vital agricultural assets.
In order to close security vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, the NSCDC Agro Rangers Unit was created. Its duties include safeguarding farmlands, ranches, silos, and forest reserves as well as resolving conflicts to advance national stability and food security.
With assistance from the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACRESAL) Project, the Gombe State Government constructed the facility, which has supplied residential accommodations, a solar power system, and a motorized borehole.
Buhari Saad, the Gombe NSCDC Command’s public relations officer, stated in a press release that the project is a component of initiatives to improve security in rural areas.
The project is a strategic intervention to protect agro-allied investments and improve local security, according to Jibrin Idris, state Commandant of NSCDC, who spoke at the inauguration.
“This base’s construction is a calculated reaction to new security issues pertaining to agro-allied investments. As instructed by our Commandant General, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, the Agro Rangers will make sure that there is no illegal logging, no encroachment, and no conflicts between farmers and herders in this corridor,” Idris stated.
He continued by saying that the base would act as a forward operating center for Agro Rangers personnel, offering the Kanawa Forest Biosphere and Botanical Garden and the Kwadon community round-the-clock security.
He declared, “We are here to protect lives, livelihoods, and Gombe State’s green economy.”
The commandant praised Dr. Sani Jauro, the ACRESAL State Project Coordinator, for his dedication to enhancing the state’s agricultural and environmental resilience and thanked Governor Muhammadu Yahaya for his assistance.
Additionally, two functional motorcycles that ACRESAL had provided were introduced to improve patrol and quick response activities in the region.
Idris also advised host community members to work with security guards and use nonviolent conflict resolution techniques.For the peaceful settlement of agrarian disputes, we urge communities to work with Agro Rangers staff and utilize the Corps’ Alternative Dispute Resolution procedures,” he stated.
