According to the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists (NAD), more than 168 million Nigerians bleach their skin, putting them at risk for liver failure, cancer, and other illnesses. NAD stated that skin bleaching has reached an epidemic level in Nigeria during an event in Lagos when it announced the start of a national campaign to address the escalating public health issues associated with the condition.Journalists, dermatologists, public health specialists, and important industry stakeholders attended a press conference at the LUTH Dermatological Clinic, LUTH Annexe, Yaba, Lagos, to introduce the campaign, which had the subject “EmbraceYourSkin.” The practice of purposefully lightening the skin using topical creams, cosmetic surgeries, oral pills, and even intravenous treatments is known as “skin bleaching,” and NAD brought attention to this emerging public health concern at the briefing.
