Comrade Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has made accusations that electricity generation companies (GenCos) are engaging in “institutionalized extortion” and arguing for “phantom subsidies.” According to the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), these claims are a misrepresentation of the facts and a disservice to the ongoing efforts to stabilize Nigeria’s electricity supply industry. While acknowledging Nigerians’ frustrations with the unreliable power supply, APGC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joy Ogaji said that calling the lawful operations of power companies “robbery” and “grand deception” is an oversimplified and divisive narrative that fails to take into account the industry’s complex realities.
