The former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-rufai, has issued a statement to deny circulating reports that he is supporting a Southern presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The reports, which gained traction on social media, falsely claimed that the politician—whom the article identifies as an African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain—had abandoned the North’s Atiku Abubakar, arguing that it was the South’s turn for the presidency. The reports suggested he might be backing Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate.
In his statement, El-rufai denounced the claim as “untrue” despite its virality, stating he never made such comments in any of his speeches, interviews, or social media posts.
He emphasized that his verifiable social media platforms are where he expresses his own opinions, and no views should be attributed to him unless they are explicitly expressed there or during interviews with respected media platforms. He also cautioned against misattributing opinion articles he shares to him personally.
The former governor criticized the “irresponsible politicking” and “deliberate misuse of social media for spreading fake news,” noting that some senior editors had failed in their duty to verify the information. He urged everyone, including media leaders, to live up to their responsibility to verify information before posting, in order to combat “fiction and fakery.”
